Caudalie: the buyer's guide

Caudalie is the Bordeaux brand that turned grape-vine by-products into skincare: resveratrol from the vines, polyphenols from the seeds, viniferine from the sap. It is the "clean" French pharmacy brand with the prettiest packaging, and a couple of its products are backed by real results.

What the brand is known for

Founded in 1995 by Mathilde and Bertrand Thomas at the Smith Haut Lafitte vineyard, Caudalie built its reputation on antioxidant grape-seed polyphenols and a no-parabens, no-mineral-oil, no-phthalates formulation policy. The brand runs vinotherapy spas and is sold in both French pharmacies and department stores.

Beauty Elixir

The cult product: a grape-water, rosemary and mint face mist that Mathilde Thomas based on a recipe credited to Queen Isabelle of Hungary. It is used to set makeup, refresh skin and tighten pores. It contains fragrance and essential oils, so it is not for very reactive skin.

Vinoperfect Radiance Serum

The bestseller and the product with the strongest claims: viniferine from vine sap as a brightening agent for dark spots and post-acne marks. It works gradually, over two to three months, and only if you wear sunscreen daily. The Vinoperfect Brightening Glycolic Night Cream pairs with it.

Resveratrol-Lift

The firming and anti-ageing line, built on resveratrol and hyaluronic acid. The night cream (Resveratrol-Lift Firming Night Cream) is the standout; the eye balm is good for dryness, less so for dark circles.

Vinosun

Caudalie's mineral and chemical sunscreens, SPF 30 and 50, with a lightweight texture and reef-friendly positioning. The Vinosun Protect Very High Protection Face Fluid SPF 50 is the one that works under makeup.

Questions people ask

Is Caudalie a pharmacy brand or a luxury brand?

Both: it is sold in French pharmacies and in Sephora. Prices sit above La Roche-Posay and below Sisley.

Does Vinoperfect work on melasma?

It helps with surface dark spots and post-acne marks; melasma is hormonal and deeper, and most dermatologists would pair Vinoperfect with a prescription treatment for that.

Is Caudalie cruelty-free?

Caudalie is certified cruelty-free (it withdrew from mainland China retail to keep the certification) and is a member of 1% for the Planet.
